YouTube rival Vimeo is reportedly launching a section dedicated entirely to music tomorrow, according to a report by Digital Music News.
LAUNCH has asked Vimeo to confirm the report.
The music store will have pre-licensed tracks that filmmakers can incorporate into their videos. Producers will reportedly have to pay for some of the content, but other tracks will be available through a creative commons license.
Audiosocket, a music licensing and technology company, will power the service with 33K+ film-ready tracks.
"This is big for artists -- the exposure via Vimeo to the filmmaking community is huge," an Audiosocket executive tells DMN.
About 40% of YouTube visitors watched music videos in July according to comScore. YouTube relaunched its music site last month [ see our story ].
New York-based Vimeo was founded in 2004 by Zach Klein and Jake Lodwick and is owned by Barry Diller's IAC. The site had about 60M unique visitors in August worldwide.
