VoIP service Twilio just launched a Canadian SMS API to let developers build apps that send and receive text messages through Canada-based phone numbers.

SMS for existing Canadian Twilio users is effective immediately. Until now, only customers in the U.S. could use Twilio to send and receive text messages.

Twilio raised $17M in Series C funding from Bessemer and Union Square Ventures earlier this month to use toward international expansion, Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson told Techcrunch.

“At Twilio we’re passionate about making telecommunications available to developers worldwide," Twilio Product Manager Patrick Malatack said in a press release. “There is a clear demand for local SMS numbers from Canadian developers, now that Canadian SMS is available, we can’t wait to see what developers from the land of Alexander Graham Bell can come up with.”

Canadian applications currently powered by Twilio include Guardly, a mobile personal safety system that instantly connects family members and authorities, and creative communications solution service RandomType.

In September, Twilio launched Connect to offer developers an easy way to directly charge customers and in October brought its services to the U.K. so developers could attain UK-based telephone numbers.

Founded in 2007 by Jeff Lawson, Evan Cooke and John Wolthuis, Twilio has received a total of $33.7M+ from investors including Union Square Ventures, David Cohen, Dave McClure and Chris Sacca.
