Report: Android Approaching 50% of US Smartphone Market Share


Google's Android currently ranks as the top smartphone platform with a market share of 43.7%, which increased by 5.6 percentage points since the last three-month period, according to a recent report by comScore.

Apple, with 27.3% of the market, and Blackberry manufacturer RIM, with 19.7%, are ranked second and third although RIM's share has dropped 5 percentage points since May.

The study surveyed 30K+ U.S. mobile subscribers from May to August 2011. During that period, 234M people over the age of 13 used a mobile device and 84.5M owned a smartphone in the U.S.

The comScore report also found that Samsung has the highest number of mobile subscribers with 24.8% of the market, while Apple and Blackberry manufacturer RIM have the lowest with 8.7% and 8.1%.
