Google Offers Keeps Groupon and LivingSocial on Their Toes, Launches Android Mobile App

Google is continuing to make a dent in the daily deals market with the launch of the Google Offers mobile app for Android, with an iOS app soon to come, in addition to launching its first national offer with REI.

The app lets you discover, buy and redeem deals from your mobile device. The app will also notify you about offers that match your interest. You can use the app to redeem the current offer with REI, which is to spend $15 for $25 to spend.

Google first entered the deals space in May, and went live June 1 in Portland. LivingSocial, founded in 2007, released its iOS app Dec. 5, 2009 and its Android app in 2010. According to Android Marketplace data, 1-5M have installed the LivingSocial app on Android.

Groupon, founded in 2008, launched its iPhone app Feb. 27, 2010, its BlackBerry app Dec. 28, 2010 and its
iPad app April 28, 2011.

LAUNCH has contacted Google, Groupon and LivingSocial and will update this piece if we receive a response.

In September, Google borrowed LivingSocial and Groupon's strategy of sponsoring local events and considering that both LivingSocial and Groupon have companion apps for merchants, that might be one more thing Google "borrows" from its competitors.

In February 2010, Google launched Shopper, which features offers, barcode scanning to find out more information about a product, voice search and more.

"Shouldn't this app be a part of Google Shopper?" user KA3YAN writes on the Google blog. "It seems that it should considering you can already see your purchased offers in Shopper."
