BookTour, an Amazon-funded startup founded in 2009 and based in San Francisco, is shutting down its services Sept. 1 due to a lack of authors and changes in book marketing budgets, according to an email sent Tuesday to BookTour authors.

Authors can download existing tour data as an XML file from their page or from here.

"And while we would like to continue providing the valuable service that is BookTour, everyone here has families to feed and bills to pay," the email read. "As such, the founders are working on new and exciting ventures in publishing and software development."

BookTour currently offers a free directory of author events, allowing users to find when particular authors are coming to a local area. Its interface enables authors to create a profile page that displays their biography, books and upcoming events. Upon shutting down, BookTour recommends using Amazon Author Central, Google Calendar, Upcoming.org or Eventful as replacement tools.

LAUNCH has asked Kevin Smokler, co-founder and CEO of BookTour, for comment. We will update if we receive a response.
