If you're trying to get a job in today's economy, you might need to step up your game with a killer resume. Take Florian Mettetal, for example, who used his background in computer programming to create his own website, Florbook, which resembles the greatly anticipated Facebook Timeline.
"The new Facebook timeline view is going to be a very successful product for Facebook," Florian tells LAUNCH via email. "They have designed a style which blends personality with information and when creating a resume I believe this is what recruiters are looking for too."
Florian built the site using HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP, but admits that his experience in coding was outdated.
"When I hit a roadblock I would ask friends or chat rooms and gradually I figured it all out," Florian says. "It was a great learning experience for me and renewed my respect for the coding teams at Facebook."
Florian says that he wanted to utilize the navigation menu on the right side, noting that it is helpful in navigating the wealth of information on the page.
"This was one of my objectives, to create a website that could provide a better summary of everything I’ve done and where I want to go than a 1-page resume can provide, while still not overwhelming a recruiter that isn’t going to spend a lot of time reading my resume," Florian says.
Creating new ideas or implementing a new use for an existing can be beneficial for job seekers to highlight their strengths, Florian says.
"It can’t be stated enough that social media is one of the most powerful tools a job seeker has to help their resume stand out from the crowd," Florian says.
Florian says that considering the economy -- the California unemployment rate is 11.9% compared to the all-time high of 12.5% in December 2009 -- it is necessary to stand out.
"We are a generation of recent college graduates settling for any sort of work just to pay off our student loan debts, instead of pursuing a career that we went to college for," Florian says. "Finding any job, let alone a career related job, is fiercely competitive. Therefore, to find a good job recent graduates must be innovative and step beyond the model set by the baby boomers. Recruiters have an inbox full of emails from applicants scrambling to find something, anything. To find an opportunity that will advance our careers, we must outsmart the system and bring the recruiters to us."
If you're wondering, "How can I create such an awesome resume?" Florian says he might be able to help you out.
"...I decided that if enough people sent me requests that I would recode the site with a CMS and user admin area," Florian says. "My hope is that as long as the service is free, valuable, and is never competitive or harmful to Facebook that they will not initiate any legal action."
Florian is the Director and Marketing of Sales at Arvixe, a web hosting service, and has a background in web development.
