Gmail users now have offline access to their email, and Google is rolling out offline access for Calendar and Docs this week.

"Offline access isn't usually of everyday importance, but when you need it, it’s very important," Google Senior Manager of Communications and Public Affairs Andrew Kovacs writes on his G+ page. "Appropriately, I'm posting this from an airplane."

Before you can access Gmail offline, you have to install the Gmail Offline web app for Chrome [download here]. The HTML5-powered app is based on the version for tablets. If you lose your Internet connection, open a new tab in Chrome and click the "Gmail Offline" icon.

Offline mode in Google Calendar will allow users to view events and RSVP to appointments. Offline editing is not yet available for Google Docs, but users will be able to view documents and spreadsheets.

"We're pushing the boundaries of modern browsers to make this possible, and while we hope that many users will already find today’s offline functionality useful, this is only the beginning," Google Product Manager Benoît de Boursetty writes on the Gmail blog.
