The Cult of Amazon Prime

By Jason Calacanis

There are two types of people in the world: those with Amazon Prime and those without.

How you think about consumption, commerce and your personal time is radically different depending on if you've join the cult -- yet.

And to be clear, Prime is a cult you will be joining.

At dinner parties and business meetings, I'll frequently ask who has Prime and what they think of it. The number has grown from one or two in seven to three or four out of seven folks over the past five years. My circles tend to be people like you, which is to say more technically sophisticated (and good looking).

Prime is at a tipping point.

Amazon is doing so well with Prime it will not say how many Prime members it has acquired since the program launched in 2005. Prime launched in three other countries -- the U.K., Japan and Germany -- in 2007.

It's around 5M according to the folks debating the issue on the interwebs. My guess is it doubles every 18 months or so.

One in three American households will have Amazon Prime (or have access to Prime) in the next four years.

This is a lock because

Founders Define Reality (& Give Hope)

By Jason Calacanis

I recently had author Warren Bennis on "This Week in Startups" and he said something that struck me deeply:

"Leaders define reality."

The interview was so long we broke it into two parts. It's a commitment, but if you watch it I think you'll get a lot our of it. Part one & two.

The origin of the quote seems to be Napoleon Bonaparte: "The leader's role is to define reality, then give hope."

The challenge is that as a founder, you're going to be faced with brutal reality after brutal reality.

Looking back at my three big startups I can recall each of these "reality defining" discussions, and there is some advice I can give on them.

Forget Lean Forward and Lean Back -- It's Curl Up

By Jason Calacanis

For the better part of the last two decades we've compared the lean-forward experience of computers with the lean-back experience of television.

At Mahalo today, as we were brainstorming new apps, we discussed an idea I had for a new app. Our president Jason Rapp asked, "Well, do you see it as a lean forward or a lean back experience?"

I thought for a minute and said, "Neither, it's more of a tablet experience. What would you call that? We need a name for that."

Then it hit me. Duh?

"It's the curl-up experience!" I blurted out.

Everyone nodded in complete understanding.

In fact, the most important experience in media is no longer...

When we recently logged into Facebook, we immediately noticed an anti-Mitt Romney ad by...

Facebook's User Growth Continues to Decrease while Google+ Adds 625K Users Daily

Facebook's growth rate for its user base is continuing to decrease while Google+'s user base is growing, and at the same time when Google+ just experienced its biggest traffic month of all time.

As All Facebook reports, in the 1,001 days from April 1, 2009 through Dec. 28, 2011, Facebook added 609M, with averages of around 600K per day and seven per second. But according to Optim.al, that growth rate has tapered off.

While Facebook's growth soared to 8.39 users per second from July 2010 through March 2011, it slowed to 7.02 users per second from March 2011 through Sept. 2011. From Sept. 2011 through Dec. 2011, growth dropped to five users per second.

Last month, an unofficial Googler revealed how Google+'s growth is accelerating, noting how it recently passed 62M users and adds 625K users per day. Still, Facebook has...

Kinvey Holiday Video "12 Days of TechStars" Proves Tech Parodies Can Be Funny

We love getting in the holiday spirit as much as the next exhausted and caffeine-dependent startup, but if you're going to make a parody video, you better do it well [ see Gizmodo's blistering review of First Round Capital's "Friday" rendition ].

Cambridge-based Kinvey, part of the 2011 TechStars Boston class, managed to put together a clever parody of "12 Days of Christmas" featuring lines like "three sexless months," "five sleepless weeks," and "11 piping pizzas" in about three days -- most of the footage was shot on Tuesday according to Kinvey's blog post, which also has the complete lyrics. The video was up by this afternoon.

Finally: Evernote Launches Skitch for iPad, iPhone App Coming Soon

We've been waiting for Skitch integration with Evernote ever since they acquired the popular photo editing Mac app in August but now it's finally here.

"Millennia ago, all you needed to get a point across to your buddies was charcoal and a cave wall or a pointy stick and some sand," the Evernote blog states. "Now, we sit for hours crafting passive-agressive emails to make a point that once was communicated with an arrow and a grunt. There’s beauty in that simplicity. Let’s return to it."

While Evernote launched Skitch for Android earlier this year, until today, iOS users could not use Skitch on their devices.

With Skitch for iPad, you can...

Conan O'Brien Roasts the Kindle Fire (video)

While Amazon issued an update to the Kindle Fire this morning, Conan O'Brien's Team Coco still (literally) roasted the device on the show last night [h/t Cult of Android].

Team Coco mocked the Kindle Fire's poorly placed power button, security concerns and other areas of dissatisfaction.

O’Brien has a history of mocking tech products. In March, Team Coco produced a parody of Apple’s iPad 2 launch video and in June, they targeted the ill-received Final Cut Pro X. But in September, Team Coco shared its studio on Airbnb to...

Google Search Launches New Yorker-esque Cartoon Caption Challenge

Google just launched a search caption challenge to see who can come up with a caption that best describes what a cartoon character is searching for on Google.

"As a lifelong fan and connoisseur of New Yorker style cartoons, I always believed in the power of humor not just to entertain but to enlighten," Google VP of Engineering and Cartoons Udi Manber writes on the Google blog. "I have tried to connect humor to everything I do (although, I have to admit, not always successfully). The best cartoonists possess great insights, which they illustrate in a clever package that we can consume in seconds and yet remember for years."

To submit a caption, go to Inside Search and submit your idea. It will automatically appear on the site, and you can share it with friends via a unique link. You can also vote on your favorite submissions and the most popular will rise to the top.

"We've left it to you to imagine what they'd be searching...

Gowalla Users: TouristEye Wants You to Migrate Your Data to Its Service

Gary Arndt is a Gowalla user who migrated his data to TouristEye.

When Gowalla officially announced earlier this month that Facebook was acquiring the check-in service and shutting it down, most people focused on whether Gowalla and Facebook had screwed Gowalla's investors.

But what about Gowalla's 2M or so users? TouristEye, a check-in and discovery app for travelers founded in Madrid in early 2010, clearly saw an opportunity to bring them to its service.

We first learned of TouristEye's migration campaign when we received the following email from a Gowalla contact:

White House Gets #40dollars to Trend on Twitter as Payroll Tax Cut Deadline Looms

President Barack Obama has used Twitter to fight political battles before -- he tweet-spammed over the summer as the deadline for raising the country's debt ceiling closed in.

Today his staff is encouraging people to use the hashtag #40dollars and tweet what $40 a paycheck means to them, the amount the average American stands to lose if Congress does not renew the current payroll tax cut by Jan. 1, 2012. By late this afternoon, #40dollars became a trending topic on Twitter.

House Speaker John Boehner is using #payroll in his tweets about renewing the tax cut -- but that term is most definitely not trending.
